Hi Todd,
in 1 and 2 I agree with Bastian.
In 3. I assume a faulty regulator. Also the carbon brushes might be worn so, that they are pushed off the collector ring at higher revolutions. The carbon brushes are even incorporated the regulator. The use of renewing just the regulator, depends on the conditions of the collector ring, the alternator coil and at least the alternator bearings. If one of them is worn too, it´s quiet useless to change the regulator only . Exchanging noisy bearings is quiet easy, as the alternator is dismantled. Lathe machining is necessary, as the collector ring is worn.
