How to diagnostic your car?

1. Check the fluids and do a maintenance check of your car. To do this, check the oil, transmission fluid, and coolant fluid levels in your car. If the levels look fine, move on to the maintenance check. This is where you would spot check your engine for frayed belts, leaking fluids or anything unusual that stands out to you. If you find an abnormality during the check, fix that first and see if your car problem ceases. 2. Listen for new and strange noises your car is making. A knocking sound in the engine is serious and needs immediate attention, whereas a whining sound may be a belt, which is less serious. Take note of any strange smells. A chemical-like smell signifies an electrical problem. A strong exhaust odor could be a gasket leak or exhaust problem. 3. Look over your vehicle and take note of anything unusual. If you choose to, take your vehicle into a local car parts shop. Most of these places offer to do a free code read of your engine, and may be able to pinpoint any problems. A code readeris where the technician can plug a diagnostic tool into your car's diagnostic port, usually located in the driver's side lower dash. The tool detects problems in your car and diagnoses the problem for you.
4. Take your car into a shop, if all else fails. Tell the mechanic anything you found while trying to diagnose the problem yourself.

Let's go for a little more realistic kinda situation:
1. Open up the hood.
2. Light yourself a cigarette. While investigating the engine and everything else you find in there, nod your head from time to time and perform noises of wisdom
3. Rip someting out, that looks as if it is broken
4. Get yourself a coffee / beer, try not to forget to take the cigarette out of your mouth before you drink
5. Examine the part you've been just ripping out. Clean everything with at least 1 1/2 liters of brake cleaner. Keep some of the brake cleaner for later purposes, you would like to start the grill perhaps or... (sure you will)
6. Examine again. Looks not broken at all. Reassamble.
7. Start engine
8. Extinguish fire coming from the part that you've been just flooding with brake cleaner.
9. Get yourself another beer. Proceed with step 3. Repeat until the car is fixed, or somebody appears for starting a bbq etc..
So much for a realisitic car diag. Go get yourself a beer and stop spamming...

..thats where the leftover part of the brake cleaner comes into play. It is distributed over a giant pile of charcoal, emerging from the trunk of an old car, being kept for this very purpose. After approximately 2 hours of infernal flame and smoke you can try to grill a small piece of cow (2-3 kgs) before proceeding with something serious

And none of that cheap and nasty knock off Chinese stuff that is uninspiring, costs a lot, and leads to disappointment It's all about bang for buck.
Although, two bangs would be better!

They aren't cheap! There's pay now, or pay for it later. Either way, it not going to be satisfying, inspiring or fulfilling. Just expensive. Like buying a new car!
I speak not from a position of experience, I hasten to add!
