Clear headlight glass in V8
      31/05/2007 16:35

I did get some E-mails with questions about the headlights...

The headlights are full Bi-xenon lamps, with the optic adaptated from the newest MB S-class.
I have made them at home, so there are no chances to buy such lamps <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
This is the third modification of the lamps. As some of You have seen, there was a full polished glass "clear glass" in the first mod. Unfortunately i had a little crash (reversing car has punched me), so the glass was broken, but i didn't like that full polished look...
So, when I was making the lamps another time, i have tohught, that they may look better, with only polished rings for the lenses. It doesn't look so modern and fit better for the style of the car...

About the polishing. In Poland there are some guys, who have specialized in polishing headlights's glass. It is not cheap, and easy precedure. It takes some time, and it is being made with the polishing stone (to smooth the riffles on the glass). After that, the glass is very schrached, and have to be polisched to become transparent with a special glass polishing paste.

The only problem is that if you do not apply the lenses, the border wetween the light and shadow dissapear (polished glass is required to lamps with lenses), so it in not possible to polish it in normal lamps.

If somebody is interested in "clear glasses", I can help to deal with this problem. I can polish the glasses, and send to You.

Here are some pics, of polished glasses on my V8 and on my friends C4/A6 (also not able to buy in normal)...

looks neat (maybe except for the placement of the control units). I imagine the lighting is vastly improved in both high and low beams, right?
Do you have a picture of the light pattern at night?

Now if only all those modifications weren`t of questionable legality...especially in Germany.....

Hello Chris.
Can you yourself polish these glasses, or do you know somebody who does this? How have you done with the height setting? Can the floodlight be also shifted by the height, or is the lens with an engine shifted? In the V8 the light with vacuum is shifted. Does this still function in your V8?

And which price does one pay for such a polish of the glass for the lens?
Should one send 2 glasses to Poland, allow to work on and this then again send back to Germany?
Who has inserted the lenses? How were the lenses fastened?
The reflector has no more function, exists only for the optics, or? Around a decrease I see no big problems, because I already was already once at the light-technical institute in Karlsruhe - however, is also expensive, so about 800 euros costs such a single decrease. Thank you for your answers.

Greeting Manfred M.

For sure this modification is questionable. In Poland too. But our special services, haven't got enough knowledge, to be sure, that it is illegal . I have this lamps for 2 years, and there were no problems at all. I don't know why some mods, which makes our cars more safe are vorbidden...

Here are the night fotos...

The fotos are from the first mod headlights, so now the light is more powerfull...

I'll make some more photos if You want to...

I can't polish the glass myself. I had given my glasses to a guy, who have done it for me (i know him very good)...
If you want to have these glasses polished, you should send me your glasses. It takes about 2 days, to do that, and it costs about 150E (for a pair). Than i can send It back to You. It would be easier if I buy glasses here, but they are very expensive (about 120E for one side - used of course)

About lenses. I have inserted them myself. I took the lenses from the broken headlamps of MB. I had to drill a lot of the mirror which is now only for optics. The lenses are fitted with some kind of plastic material (like glue POXILIN). It has a very good adhesion and it is very very strong, and hard. (i have a lowered suspension, and there was no problem with it on the holes).
All the preferences are still working. You can move the lenses as a normal reflector (cause the lenses are fitted into it), so no problems with setting the lights correctly. I also have the manual setting from interior (as in original with the vaccum), so you can move the lights up, and down any time you want (no differences with the original ones).
The only problem is that there is no automatic (but manual) leveling which is required for original xenon lights...

It was not an easy modification. It took me 2 days to do that correctly, and to set the light stream, not to cause blindness to other drivers

Ps. There would be a nice effect if the reflector with fitted lenses was painted black (shadow line), but i like it as it is...

Ps2. I have adapted the bixenon lenses to my father's '95 A8 too, so if somebody is interested i can give some photos...

This car is originally 20V turbo...
It is whole rebuilt to V8 avant (there is only 1 original V8 Avant in the world), so it is a unique car...
It has 4.2L engine, 6-gear transmision, and it is compressed... It has about 460HP now...
So it is a deivil-machine...
