Steel wheels and winter tyres.
      19/12/2006 17:38

I have a V8 S6 Avant, 1996, on original speedline alloys (225x50x16 tyres, 16x7.5 ET37).

I am wondering what size the steel winter wheels should be for this car?

I have seen some 16x7.0 ET42 Audi wheels, which may be off an A8 or V8?

What should my car have, and might these be OK?

Are the same wheel nuts used to hold on the alloy and steel wheels, or do I need special nuts for steel wheels?

I know nothing about winter wheels & tyres. My main concern is complying with Swiss insurance regulations, and safely getting through the winter. Any ideas please?

S6 Avant, 1996, C4, 4.2L.

original equipment for the S6 were 15" steel wheels.
Audi part no. 4A0601025K Y7N , size 7JX15H2 ET40. Cost in Germany: 83 Euros.

If you live in Switzerland, have a look at www.totsteile.ch He always has a big selection of Audi wheels in stock.

Thanks for all the information, and the weblink. Very useful. I am in Switzerland, and old parts can be difficult to find here.

I have been offered some original Audi 15" alloys with winter tyres, locally in Switzerland. They are off a 91 V8. I wondered what the offset (ET) was for the original V8 wheels?

All V8 wheels have an offset of 35.
Offset in German = "Einpresstiefe" or just short "ET".
I donīt know if these wheels will fit the S6 that has an offset of 45. Probably, yes.
I`ll ask the V8 tire guru (him) . There`s a V8 meet tomorrow there....

I bought some BBS cross spoke style wheels from a V8, 16x8.0, ET35 a couple of months back.
They fitted nicely. They already had winter tyres on. I have run the car on narrower 7.5 wheels with all weather tyres (Grip not so good in summer) and with Sport Contact. The wider 8.0 wheel with winter tyres seems to handle slightly better on dry roads than the all weather tyres. Not much snow to compare wet performance though. Thanks for all the replies,

John.
