ATF level measurement

yes, too much oil can and will damage the transmission.

to measure the transmission fluid level, you first need to get a transmission fluid dipstick from Audi and then follow a decidated procedure to measure fluid level. The ATF needs to be at 80 degrees (not less and not more, best achieved by driving ~10 km after a cold start), the car has to be absolutely level, the engine must be running and all gears should have been selected (with the shifter) for a few seconds prior to measurement.
Audi has replaced the ATF dipstick with a dummy plug in 1989 to prevent owners from measuring the ATF level themselves, as there have been lots of cases of DIY overfilling and subsequently damaging the transmission.
Since I have a manual and am no expert in this, I hope that others will take the lead from here.
You can also have this done at Audi - at least they SHOULD know how to do this :-(

Re: ATF level measurement

no, the one for the engine oil will not work - way too short.
You have to get one at Audi - the part number is 01832 431D; it should cost around € 12,00.

Please do this ASAP, as too much oil in the transmission is as bad as not enough.

Re: ATF level measurement

finally got one, and the level is now ok

for those who want, the size of the stick is:

from the top to the max level : 57.2 cm
from the top to the low level : 59cm

(the engine oil stick is only 53cm long, so not enough for the gearbox oil level )

Re: ATF level measurement

But how long is the stick itself? Only 59 cm or longer, cause its important, if the stick is longer the level will not be the same as if the stick is 59 cm with the min mark on its end!

Re: ATF level measurement

Thank you indeed! This has been one of the most common mistakes that V8 owners have made over the years and I think that the wrong automatic transmission fluid level was the main cause of transmission failure in Audi V8 cars. Again I have to criticize Audi for poor judgement on this. I may be biased on this because I had to replace the transmission but I go back to the common sense: Why not have a dipstick? Yes, force me to go to Audi dealership for UFO brakes, Torsen differential, CPU, etc. But for transmission level? Again, you can only admire the guys from Mercedes Benz for their balanced approach. At least 14 years ago.
