Right way to check automatic trans. oil?

Hi!
What is the right way to checking the oil level on 4HP24 aut.transmission?
-engine on idling,of course, but the shifter on "N" or something else?
My car is -92 with ABH-engine.
Thanks.....

Hello Jukka,

our member "b homburg" described it in detail some years ago:

Correctly determining transmission fluid level is NUCLEAR SCIENCE on these cars
Do you have a transmission fluid dipstick? Audi deleted it in ’89 after owners regularly overfilled the transmission. If not, get one at your local Audi dealer. Part number should be 018321431D, cost around € 13.
In order to show the correct fluid level, the ATF needs to be at operating temperature (80degrees!). Drive the car around for ~10-15 kms to attain that temperature.
Park on a level surface, leave the engine running at idle speed and put the shift lever through all positions once or twice, then into “N” or “P”. Then use the dickstip….
The ATF level on the dipstick must be somewhere between the “min” and “max” markings, with the difference between min and max. being 0.6 liters. Too much ATF is as bad as not enough, so when there is too much fluid in the transmission, drain some.

Hope it helps...

Best Regards

Alex
